Bergamo Orio al Serio to Milan: every option compared (2026)

Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is marketed as "Milan Bergamo", but it sits about 50 km east of Milan. That distance is the entire story: everything you need to decide happens in the gap between a 5 EUR bus and a door-to-door car.

The short answer

• Cheapest and most frequent: shuttle bus to Milano Centrale, roughly 10-12 EUR one way, about 55-70 minutes depending on traffic.
• Most predictable at night: a private transfer booked in advance, because the last useful buses thin out and taxi queues at BGY collapse after the last arrivals.
• Least recommended: improvising. BGY has one terminal, one bus lane and a taxi rank that empties fast.

Option 1: the shuttle buses

Three operators (Terravision, Orio Shuttle and Flixbus among them) run the same route: BGY forecourt to Piazzale Luigi di Savoia, the east side of Milano Centrale. Departures are typically every 20-30 minutes during the day.

What actually matters:

• Buy online, not at the desk. Online fares are usually a few euros cheaper and you skip a queue that gets ugly when three flights land together.
• Journey time is 50 minutes with no traffic, 75+ in the evening rush. Do not plan a 19:00 dinner off a 17:30 landing.
• Luggage goes in the hold, one large bag plus hand luggage included by all operators.
• You are dropped on the Centrale side street, not inside the station. Walking to the metro takes another 5-8 minutes.

If your accommodation is near Centrale, the bus is genuinely hard to beat on value.

Option 2: train via Bergamo

Since the airport rail link opened, the pattern is: airport to Bergamo station, then Trenord regional train Bergamo to Milano Centrale (about 50 minutes) or to Milano Porta Garibaldi. Total time is comparable to the bus, sometimes better in heavy traffic, and it is immune to the A4 motorway jamming.

Downsides: one change with luggage, and regional trains are much less frequent late in the evening. Check the last departure before committing.

Option 3: taxi

A metered taxi BGY to central Milan typically lands in the 110-140 EUR range and takes 50-60 minutes. It is the same money as a pre-booked car with none of the certainty, and the rank empties quickly after the last arrivals. Use it only as a fallback.

The mistakes people actually make

1. Assuming BGY is in Milan. It is not. Budget 60-75 minutes door to door regardless of method.
2. Booking a 06:00 flight without checking first departures. The first shuttle from Centrale is usually around 03:30-04:00; outside that window you need a car.
