Best day trips from Milan by train: times, prices, itineraries (2026)

Milan's real superpower is that it is the rail hub of northern Italy. From Milano Centrale you can reach a lake in 40 minutes and a different region in an hour. Here are the trips that are genuinely worth a day, with the timings that actually apply.

How to book, briefly

Regional trains (Trenord, Trenitalia Regionale): fixed price, no need to book ahead, buy on the day. Validate paper tickets before boarding.
High-speed (Frecciarossa, Italo): book 2-4 weeks ahead for the cheap fares; walk-up prices can triple.
Leaving Centrale before 08:30 buys you a genuinely different, quieter version of every destination on this list.

Como (40 minutes)

The classic. Two stations: Como San Giovanni from Centrale (regional, ~40 min, around 5 EUR) and Como Nord Lago from Cadorna, which drops you directly at the lakefront.

Do: the funicular to Brunate for the view, the ferry to Bellagio or Varenna (about 2 hours each way by slow boat, 45 minutes by fast service), the cathedral. Leave by 08:30 if you want the ferry to Bellagio and back in a day.

Bergamo (50 minutes)

Underrated and, for many people, better than Como. Regional trains from Centrale take about 50 minutes for roughly 6 EUR. From Bergamo station take the bus or funicular up to Città Alta, the walled upper town: Piazza Vecchia, the Colleoni Chapel, the Venetian walls, and views over the plain.

Compact enough for a half day, and you can pair it with a late lunch.

Verona (1h10 by high-speed)

Frecciarossa gets you there in about 70 minutes. Roman arena, Piazza delle Erbe, the Adige river, and in summer the opera season in the arena itself. Book the opera and the train together, and take a late train back; the last fast services run around 22:00-23:00.

Turin (1 hour by high-speed)

An entirely different city: baroque arcades, the Egyptian Museum (the second most important in the world), the Mole Antonelliana and the best chocolate and coffee culture in Italy. One hour by Frecciarossa or Italo. This is the trip for a rainy day, because most of Turin's best things are indoors and connected by 18 km of covered porticoes.

Pavia (35 minutes)

Cheap, close and nearly tourist-free. Regional train, ~35 min, around 4.50 EUR. A medieval university town with covered bridges and, 8 km north, the Certosa di Pavia, an extravagant Carthusian monastery that is one of the great buildings of Lombardy. Half day, easily.

Lake Maggiore and Stresa (1 hour)

Regional and Intercity trains from Centrale reach Stresa in about 60-80 minutes. From there, boats to the Borromean Islands: Isola Bella for the palace and gardens, Isola dei Pescatori for lunch. Calmer and cheaper than Como, and the gardens are the reason to go.

Lake Garda via Desenzano (1h10)

Desenzano del Garda is reachable in about 70 minutes. From there, ferries along the lake and buses to Sirmione and its Roman ruins. Best in shoulder season; in August it is very full.

Genoa and the sea (1h40)

If you want the Mediterranean, Genoa is about 100 minutes by fast train: the largest medieval old town in Europe, the aquarium, and focaccia that justifies the trip. Add another 45 minutes for the Cinque Terre, which makes for a long but feasible day if you start at 07:00.

Cremona (1 hour)

For a niche day: the violin-making city, home of Stradivari, with a museum where instruments are played daily, plus the tallest brick bell tower in Italy. Regional train, about an hour, and almost nobody goes.

Practical rules that save the day

Buy return tickets in the morning, or use the Trenitalia and Trenord apps. Evening queues at Centrale are long.
Regional trains do not have reserved seats. Board a few minutes early on Sundays.
Check strike days (sciopero). They are announced in advance and usually keep guaranteed services in commuter windows.
Leave your luggage in Milan. No day trip is improved by a suitcase. Guests with us leave bags at 5 EUR per bag per day.
