How much does a trip to Milan cost? Real 2026 prices

Milan has a reputation for being Italy's expensive city. It is, and it is not: the fashion districts are genuinely costly, while daily life runs on prices that would look normal in Bologna. Here is what a day actually costs in 2026.

Coffee and breakfast

The rule that saves the most money in Italy: prices change depending on where you stand.

• Espresso at the counter: 1.10-1.50 EUR.
• The same espresso at a table with service: 2.50-4 EUR.
• In Piazza Duomo, at a table: 6 EUR and up.

A cornetto plus cappuccino standing at a neighbourhood bar is 2.50-3.50 EUR and is what locals actually eat. Anything advertising "English breakfast" is a tourist product.

Transport

• Single urban ticket: about 2.20 EUR, valid 90 minutes across metro, tram and bus.
• Daily cap with contactless: around 7.60 EUR, applied automatically when you tap the same card.
• Ten-ride carnet: marginally cheaper than singles, but the contactless cap is simpler.
• Taxi across the centre: 12-20 EUR. Fixed 110 EUR from Malpensa.

Just tap your contactless card at the turnstile. It calculates the best fare and caps the day. No app, no queue.

Museums and sights

• Duomo (cathedral only): around 10 EUR. With rooftop lift: around 20-25 EUR.
• The Last Supper: about 15 EUR plus booking fee, and it sells out weeks ahead.
• Pinacoteca di Brera: about 15 EUR.
• Museo del Novecento: about 5 EUR, one of the best value tickets in the city.
• Castello Sforzesco courtyards: free. Museums inside: about 5 EUR.
• Free on the first Sunday of the month: many state museums, including Brera. Expect crowds.

Eating

• Pizza margherita: 6-9 EUR in a normal pizzeria.
• Pasta: 10-14 EUR.
• Cotoletta alla milanese: 18-25 EUR, more in the classic institutions.
• Aperitivo: 10-15 EUR for a drink plus buffet in Navigli or Porta Venezia. This is the best food value in Milan and functionally replaces dinner.
• Coperto: a 2-3 EUR per person cover charge is normal and legal. It is not a scam.
• Tipping: not expected. Rounding up is plenty.

• Malpensa Express train: about 13 EUR per person, each way.
• Airport coaches: 10-12 EUR per person, each way.
• Malpensa taxi: fixed 110 EUR per car.
• Our private transfer: 130 EUR total for the car, any of the three airports, 20 EUR deposit online plus 110 EUR cash to the driver.

For one or two people travelling light, the train wins. For three or four people with luggage, the car is comparable and saves an hour each way.

Luggage

Station left luggage escalates by the hour and can reach 15-20 EUR for a full day. Private shops charge 5-6 EUR per bag per day. We hold bags for our guests at 5 EUR per bag per day, before check-in or after check-out.

Where the money quietly goes

1. Sitting down for coffee in a piazza. Three times the counter price.
2. Eating within 200 m of the Duomo. Walk five minutes in any direction.
3. Buying single tickets instead of tapping contactless and hitting the daily cap.
4. Booking two airport transfers separately rather than one round trip.
5. Last-minute Last Supper tickets from resellers at four times the face price.

A realistic 3-day budget for two people

• Transport: 45 EUR
• Food and drink: 240 EUR
• Attractions: 90 EUR
• Airport transfer, return by car: 260 EUR (or 52 EUR by train for two)
• Total excluding accommodation: roughly 640 EUR by car, 430 EUR by train.
